Golden Hour 3x4 inch watercolor on arches

Gentle Farewell is a small watercolor study, just 2 by 3 inches, matted to 3 by 4 inches. It explores the subtle layering of landscape through soft transitions of orange, green, blue, and beige—an abstract terrain where sky and land meet in quiet conversation. The delicate brushwork and muted palette aim to capture a moment of calm interaction between natural elements, framed simply to preserve its understated presence. This piece developed from a focus on how colors can suggest form and space without defining them.

Shadowed Ridges is a small oil painting, just 2 by 3 inches, depicting the silhouette of local mountains at dusk. The sky holds layers of blue, orange, and yellow, shifting quietly between warmth and coolness. Soft clouds hover, their texture adding depth to the atmosphere. The horizon rests in subtle greens, suggesting distant hills that rise gently beneath the vibrant sky. I wanted to capture a familiar moment from the high country—the way the sun’s last light settles behind those ridges, quietly marking the close of day with calm and clarity.

Silent Pines is a 3 by 4 inch oil painting that captures a moment when a large, textured full moon rises—or sets—behind a stand of tall pine trees. The sky’s deep red tone creates a strong contrast with the bright moon, while dynamic blue and white brushstrokes suggest rippling water reflecting the moonlight in the foreground. This piece explores bold color contrasts and expressive brushwork to build a quiet, contemplative atmosphere drawn from the intensity of super moons. The small scale invites close observation, encouraging a pause to consider nature’s subtle rhythms and unexpected details.

Finale is a small oil painting, just 3 by 4 inches, created entirely with a palette knife. The work captures the intense energy of a sun hanging low over a forest of tall pine trees. I focused on the contrast between the glowing yellows and oranges of the sun and sky, and the deep shadows of the silhouetted trees and rocks. Below, a rocky stream mirrors the sun’s warmth with shifting patches of light and shadow. The thick, textured brushwork brings out the dynamic movement in the scene, emphasizing the constant flow between light and dark in this natural landscape.

Moonlit Butte is a small oil painting, just 3 by 4 inches, that focuses on a local mountain peak overlooking our town. I worked entirely with a palette knife to build texture and form, using shades of black, white, and gray to bring out the rugged character of the rock. Set against a solid turquoise background, the peak stands out sharply, its surfaces catching light and shadow in dynamic relief. A simple white circle to the right suggests the moon, adding a quiet, steady light to the scene. This contrasts with the rough textures of the mountain while grounding the composition in a moment of calm and clarity. The piece reflects an ongoing interest in how landscape shapes identity and memory, especially in places we come to know intimately.

Starry Starry Night 3x3 inch oil on card of our local landmark bathed in moonlight after a fresh fall of snow. This is an older painting that I was not pleased with so I tweaked it a bit.

Luminescence is a small oil painting, 5 by 7 inches, presented with triple matting and framed at 9 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches. The piece centers on a textured sphere that recalls the moon’s cratered surface, rendered in cool blues and grays against a dark background. The lighting shapes the form with a subtle shift from shadow to light, emphasizing its three-dimensional presence. Most of the colors were softly blended with my fingers to create a tactile surface that reflects the calm and stillness of deep space.

Dusk 3x4 inch oil. There is a moment when the landscape seems to hold it's breath. There is silence only the light moves.

Ethereal Drift is a small oil painting, just 3 by 4 inches, that captures a quiet moment in the night sky. A dark, star-filled background sets a still, expansive tone, while a luminous celestial body near the left center draws the eye. Around it, soft swirls of pink, lavender, and white clouds carry a textured, almost otherworldly quality, blending gently into the darkness. This piece came from a photo I took of the evening sky, and working with the oils allowed me to explore the subtle shifts between shadow and light, texture and depth, to convey a calm yet mysterious cosmic presence. Available at The Ian Russell Fine Art Gallery,Prescott, AZ.

My nUnleashed is a compact tempera piece, just 4 by 4 inches, where red, black, and white move in bold, sweeping gestures. The red shapes take center stage with organic energy, contrasting sharply against textured black and white areas that build depth and balance. Creating this work followed a week of creative block, when I chose to release control and let the colors guide the process naturally. The simple black frame holds the composition tightly, focusing attention on the dynamic tension between form and color. It’s a small painting with a big impact
