Surge is a compact yet powerful oil painting measuring 4 by 4 inches x 1 1/2 deep on wrapped canvas. In this piece, I focus on the restless energy of a wave breaking along the North Shore, using thick, textured brushstrokes to build up layers of deep blues and subtle highlights. The wave’s motion and form come alive through the careful contrasts between shadow and light, while touches of white and yellow capture the foam and glint of sunlight on moving water. This work grew from my experience watching those swells rise and fold, and it’s an ongoing exploration of the sea’s force and flow in a small, concentrated form.
