Keanae is a 39 by 39 inch oil painting that takes on the raw energy of the ocean. Using only my palette knife, I built up textured waves in layers of blue and white, capturing the clash of surf against dark volcanic rocks. The movement here is deliberate—each crestting wave carries a sense of force and motion without losing clarity. Beyond the tumult, the horizon opens to a calm sky, where a solitary sailboat rests against a softer blue backdrop. This contrast between unrest and stillness reflects a moment I experienced on my first visit to Maui, where the strength of the sea met a quiet expanse beyond.
